Covid-19 coronavirus: Software to help doctors decide who gets an ICU bed

It is expected that during the Covid-19 crisis many patients will suffer from severe illness requiring hospital care, and some will need admission to critical care with ventilatory support.

Like other countries, New Zealand is unlikely to have enough ventilators or beds in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), and so prioritization of patients will be urgently required.

Working with ICU clinicians and nurses, and overseen by an ethicist and a Māori health leader, 1000minds was used to create a tool to help clinicians prioritize Covid-19 patients for ICU. This tool will be used only if ICUs are overwhelmed.
