1000minds New Features – February 2013
- You can now share access to your 1000minds decision models with other people concurrently.
- In addition, it’s now possible to distribute the task of entering alternatives across a group of people (eg. colleagues), in preparation for applying the alternatives in a decision model.
These two features are discussed in detail below.
You can share access to your decision models with other people who have 1000minds accounts. This feature is available for each individual decision model via the shared access button at the start and mode step.
As illustrated in the screenshot below, all you have to do is enter people’s usernames and tick the boxes corresponding to their level of access (decided by you). People who don’t already have 1000minds accounts can be emailed (via 1000minds) and invited to enroll (so they can access the model(s) you’ve selected for them).
This new process activity is for distributing the task of entering alternatives across a group of people (ie. participants, as in the screenshot below) – perhaps with specialised roles or expertise – including rating the alternatives on pre-specified criteria. The alternatives can then by aggregated (by 1000minds) for decision-makers to review and apply, as usual, in a 1000minds decision model.
(Of course, the usual approach for entering alternatives – when you don’t want to distribute the task across a group of participants – is directly via the decision model itself.)
Equivalently, this alternatives entry activity can be implemented as a survey whereby participants suggest or nominate alternatives for consideration.
This new activity is available via the decision processes tab. A detailed guide is available.
Which should you use – Shared Access or Alternatives Entry?
Use shared access when people would benefit from having the power of 1000minds at their finger tips – to look at all the ranked alternatives and make selections, etc. Note they will need 1000minds accounts to do this (easily arranged, as explained earlier).
Use alternatives entry when you want participants to focus exclusively on entering alternatives. Note that they will only be able to see alternatives they enter (and any you’ve already entered), but not alternatives that others enter. They won’t need 1000minds logins, so you can use 1000minds’ process features to send them an invitation to do just this job or create a special link on a web site for people to enter alternatives at their convenience.
